Mapungubwe National Park is a national park in Limpopo Province, South Africa. It is located by the Kolope River, south of the confluence of the Limpopo and Shashe rivers. It abuts on the border with Botswana and and  Zimbabwe, and forms part of the Greater Mapungubwe Transfrontier Conservation Area. It covers an area of over 28 000 hectares.

Areas of Special Interest:

  • The Lost City located on top of Mapungubwe Hill, where an African civilisation prospered between 1200 and 1270 AD. The area was already inhabited by a growing Iron Age community from 900 AD and became rich through trade with faraway places like Egypt, India and China. This is the place where archaeologists excavated the famous golden rhino and other evidence of a wealthy African kingdom.
  • Wildlife and Mystic Scenery with Sandstone formations, mopane woodlands and unique riverine forest and baobab trees form the astounding scenic backdrop for a rich variety of animal life. Elephant, giraffe, white rhino, eland, gemsbok and numerous other antelope species occurring naturally in the area. Lucky visitors might spot predators like lions, leopards and hyenas. Birders can tick off 400 species of birds, including kori bustard, tropical boubou and pel’s fishing owl.
  • The Mapungubwe Interpretation Centre which is located near the main gate of the Mapungubwe National Park and won the building of the year competition in 2009. It is home to the famous Golden Rhino..
  • The Treetop walkway, always a good place for birds and with a view over the confluence of three countries and the meeting place of the significant Shashe and Limpopo rivers. Also take in the fossilized termite mounds to the south of the picnic area.
  • The Tshugulu Eco Route for which a 4x4 is strongly recommended. This route covers 45km (4-6 hours) through some spectacular terrain and habitat. There is also a state-of-art game hide on this route.
  • Maloutswa Pan, which is very good for game viewing in the dry season and for birds in the wet season.
  • Day walks: a qualified guide will take you for a walk in the bush. Enquire at reception. Walks depend on availability of guide.
